When we started the Farm, one of our biggest intentions was to farm organically—even though it meant more work, more time, and more patience. In California, converting land from conventional to organic is a three-year process, and we’re now in year two.
Instead of reaching for quick fixes like herbicides or poisons, we’re focusing on practices that restore the soil and rebuild ecosystems. Cover crops help replenish nutrients depleted by decades of conventional farming, while also attracting beneficial insects that keep our fields in balance.
We’re also rethinking pest management in ways that mimic nature rather than fight it. Along our western border, new oak plantings will one day provide habitat for hawks to hunt gophers during the day. At night, owl nesting boxes give these incredible birds a place to settle in—and a natural way to keep rodent populations in check.
By leaning on nature’s own systems, we’re creating a healthier farm for the long term—one we’re proud to eat from, share with our friends, and offer to our community through the farm stand.
